This blog...

...was initially for pieces done on a computer, but has since become a free-for-all. Here you'll find process work (digital and otherwise), sketch pages and studies, sometimes with commentary.

You can see the rest of my work here.

Remember kids : if you can't make pretty designs, at least make pretty lines!

sketch night - photo diary

I love sketching. I love my friends. Sketching + friends = sketch night!

Some badass art by Avery Coleman here, as well as a peek at The Octagon.  This is a 5-6 person table that's nearly always occupied by a single, selfish thesis writer when we show up.  Invariably, we frighten them off and claim The Octagon for The Righteous.

Lower right : Matt Oppriecht joins the crew!

Top center : Jordan Wan -- You can't quite see it, but his tie is made of pixels, hex color : #000000

Top right : Diego Almazan presents!

Tony Arechiga and I get into character.

Vigil Team Daily Sketches

Ben Lewis, an environment artist at Vigil, started this blog for our themed sketcher-cises, a tradition he boldly instituted. *tips hat*

"Zombie Cheerleader" has a contribution from Joe freakin' Mad!!!

Also, here's a page of heads I drew in a meeting, scanned and tossed up. I never feel like finishing anything.

weapon demo

I did a quick demonstration of "Darksiders"y weapons for a coworker, mainly to show how to use the page in a puzzle-piece fashion, and flit around rather than doing one thing at a time. Was going to toss it, as it's quite loose and throwaway, but I figured I'd post it up instead.

brush fiddle

Today has been great for so many reasons I've lost count. But here's one more to add to the pile : my lead gave me a new .abr file with a painterly brush that's a joy to use. Here's my initial test tinker...

Artgasm : Gemini School Open House

Had the privilege of visiting the Gemini School of Visual Arts & Communication tonight for their annual "Industry Day."  Got back and immediately had to sift through all the photos.  Amazing place.  Amazing talent.  And so close at hand this whole time!

Here's a big ol' collage I whipped together. Thanks to founders Roger and Colette Barcilon for hosting, director Manny Carrasco for VIP-tour-guiding and my good friend Dan Beaulieu for cluing me into this awe-inspiring event!  Whooooosh!  Artgasm!

Newly added to our ranks of epic sketchers :

Certain Affinity's Jason Borne! Shit just got about 30% realer.

My output = more of the usual.

Zombie Cheerleader

This was a drawing challenge at work.

I've always had a strong dislike for cheerleaders, mainly because they were never intended for me. They exist to honor athletes. A different breed of man.

"Rah, rah, rauuuuughhhhhhhhhhh!!"

sketchfwiends

Another epic sketch night with my epic sketch friends! This week we were treated to a new member, BioWare character artist Jarrod Hollar. Amazing talent.  Our ranks grow ever stronger!

[below] Unaltered sketch page from last night that I'll be cleaning up for Babe Lab.  Was wanting to do a pose analysis of different ways the hands interface with the head, because I think that kind of tactility is important.  Though I juuust realized I left off one of the most obvious ones : blowing a kiss!  And what the hell, there should be one smoking a cigarette as well.

New Vigil Games Website

I was commissioned to do some stylized portraits for Vigil's new site. Here's the first batch.  They were tinted a different color.

(typo in the file name -- ah, whatever)

Oh hey, also, it looks like our Warhammer 40K vid went out just in time for E3.  Dark Millennium Online!  I got to design (redesign?) that dude with with the book at the beginning.  Model by One Lung.  Animations by Jeremy Fones.

lifedrawing log - 06.14.10

Note to self : don't sit in the center of the room again. The model always feels they need to face in the direction of the audience...stage front. All those dead-on shots just kill depth. You can still get good stuff, don't get me wrong. I just always tend to sit to either side in order to get those nice 3/4 views with heavily receding/advancing forms. 6B was an imagined view of 6, just because I had that too-perfect tunnel vision.

Robin Hood - study

Here's something I didn't expect : Went over to Toph's and wound up drawing still frames of Disney's Robin Hood with him. Fun as hell. I need to do this more often.

Autodestruct music review/interview -- Wisp

Headphone Commute was kind enough to give me an audience with another of my favorite musicians, Wisp.

Here's a link to the review.
And to the interview.

Babe Lab Update - Chris Bourassa

My penpal Chris Bourassa hooked up a sick tut for Babe Lab.  Friends I've bugged about this : perfect example of what I'm talkin' 'bout!  That's some pro shit right there.  Superbly handled.

Singularity concepts - teaser

Vinod Rams art alert! Raven pinned some of his now-old Singularity creature shit.  No one draws a Zek Fatty quite like Vinod.  He's now with Seattle's Monolith, and from what he tells me, is happy as a clam.  Good for Vinod. And bad for Raven.

lifedrawing log - 06.08.10

Chelsea pretty much rules. She's the only model who'll get drinks with us afterward to discuss the finer points of anime, Jonathan Coulton and Homestarrunner.com.

Massive turnout from Austin's game industry last night. Layne Johnson is quite the Mack Daddy. Lifedrawing always used to be so dull from a social standpoint. No one to talk to between intervals...no one to hang out with after... I miss attending the Saturday morning sessions, but compared to this, those things were an exercise in patience. I'm mad at enough at the world already; I don't need this to be yet another excuse to rip into people. (Beer helps.)

Vigil Mail 001

I apologize for reproducing this, but I think of all the amusing email threads from my game industry friends that get lost forever, and just wanted to preserve this priceless exchange. This is mainly for my benefit, but if you're at all interested, read from the bottom.

This so perfectly sums up the dynamic between all involved parties.

sketchflex / namedrop

Got the honor of meeting Avalanche's fantastic Ryan Wood at our weekly sketch function last night! A most unexpected treat. Also, Jason Rosenstock has started attending, a Bioware contractor. Ben Olson was also here over the weekend. Dude's working on Rage for id Software...insane talent. Not too shabby, our rotating cast of characters...

(I never feel like finishing or coloring shit at these things.)

Early June playlist :
-Enduser "1/3"
-Pendulum "Immersion"
-Helios "Unleft"
-Squarefeet "Flatfoot"
-Trentemoller "Into The Great Wide Yonder"
-Mono "Holy Ground : NYC Live With The Wordless Music Orchestra"
-v/a "Hospital Mix 8 : Mixed by Logistics"

Looking forward to :
-The Flashbulb "Arboreal" (8 days left!)
Video for "Undiscovered Colors"
Benn Jordan's music makes me feel good to be alive.  Technically organic.  Damned beautiful.

Plaque, bitches!!!

Vigil gave us all commemorative Darksiders plaques today. Of course, I don't need such things to remind me of the experience, but hey...free plaque!

Bonus : Josh Coons decapitates me with a Blizzard sword (I got better.), I pretend to wield the Chaos Eater, and a bunch of us gawk at Toph, doin' his thang. Also, War gave me daps. We cool like dat.

Darksiders Post Mortem

Looks like someone pinned a post mortem for Darksiders, and slapped a biiiiig version of my Lilith drawing in the background.  It's a crazy-big .pdf -- might take a while to load.
