...was initially for pieces done on a computer, but has since become a free-for-all. Here you'll find process work (digital and otherwise), sketch pages and studies, sometimes with commentary.

You can see the rest of my work here.

What can blue do for you?

Here's a walkthrough of my "finished" line art process as it stands. The proportional errors should have been corrected in step one, but as usual I got ahead of myself. I'll do my best to make amends in the color pass, which you'll see in my next WIP :)

1. grayscale thumbnails in Photoshop
2. convert image to pure cyan with channel mixer, print w/ color inkjet
3. tighten with blue pencil over printout
4. black pass with Verithin pencil/hb lead
5. scan, hue/sat out the blue/cyan
6. multiply line art, tweak levels

Shuffled the figures around so they don't look as bunched.

Sketch Night Austin mag blurb

The March 2008 issue of Imagine FX has a small article on sketch groups including Drink And Draw and Sketch Night Austin. They also gave yours truly a little spotlight section, so I'm quite happy about that, even though they squnched my "Alien Picnic" drawing onto an area the size of a postage stamp.

A couple errors on the columnist's part :
-Sketch Night Austin is NOT affiliated with or modeled after Drink And Draw. Theirs is a wonderful institution -- I own their nice hardcover book -- but we are not copycats!
-It is not "my" group, and I've never referred to it as such. I merely belong to it and moderate the email list.

Since I didn't get a free copy out of the deal, I scanned Vigil's and pinned the spread here. Nyah.

evening doodles

STILL trying to arrive at an efficient method for working digitally while maintaining some line. It's really tough keeping the level of detail consistent, and even though the dimensions are no larger than a sheet of A4, it feels like I'm working on a canvas the size of a football field. My short attention span wanes after just a few hours. I began this page at 300 dpi, and it was murder. Gonna see if I can swing 200, then upres to 300 for the coloring bit. Would love to push pixels at 72 dpi, but there's no way that's going to size up in a non-choppy way. I'll make good use of this Cintiq yet!

Plan of attack for next experiment :
-100 dpi for blotty underdrawing (try to get this as figured out as possible before moving on)
-200 dpi for dark lines
-300 dpi for color and corrections
