When I'm idle I draw heads. Sometimes I have a magazine open at Barnes & Noble. Sometimes I'm watching TV with a clipboard on my lap and a kitten clamboring up one leg. Here's last week's "idle" output comped onto a big ol' sheet.
It's nice to do something when you're doing nothing.
This blog...
...was initially for pieces done on a computer, but has since become a free-for-all. Here you'll find process work (digital and otherwise), sketch pages and studies, sometimes with commentary.

Naked Lunch - 05.30.09
Back in the saddle after last week's server swap.
Today I sampled Austin's newest lifedrawing meetup, Naked Lunch, which focuses on shorter poses, 7 minutes max. Thanks to the kind and talented folks at Powerhouse Animation for hosting, and putting their own spin on it. Refreshing!
Here's last week's Saturday morning session...ugh, some difficulties with the head and hand placement. In my defense, this was my first naked old dude!

Web hosting lull / contact info
www.autodestruct.com's host will be doing some maintenance from the 20th-29th, meaning I may not be able to update content for a while. I don't understand/care why it's necessary, but in the meantime, I can be reached at djunderfoot [at] gmail.com

Necronomicook - final images / reflections
Uploading the images here, as well as two high res ones, to look at them on other machines...check for final corrections. As my officemate Phu would say, "Uuuuugh, I'm so over it."
High res 1
High res 2
Even so, this was a fun and humbling experience. Lots of great entries this year. Lots and lots. Hot damn! Wow.
To arrogantly quote myself from last year's judging panel...
"In any friendly contest there are those who enter to win and those who enter to have fun. While it's impossible to know the motive of each contestant in Dominance War, that sense of fun -- of play vs. competition -- is communicated in the finished work. Every entry that perked my interest reads as a labor of love. This, I think, is what most concept artists wish their work to be : not mere behind-the-scenes pre-production (though that is certainly core to its purpose), but something they can take pride in by bringing a piece of themselves to. Something that can stand alone, connect with others and bridge the gap between the fine and the functional."
Come on, Necronomicook! Baby needs a new Ipod Touch!

more nudes -- this time from the noggin
Lifedrawing isn't worth much if you can't squirrel some of it away.
I'm trying to get away from the easy, straight-up-and-down poses (there are a few in here like this), pushing overlap, twists and overall dynamism. I'm finding bounding boxes useful -- helps introduce more drastic angularity and provides a space to work within. A blank page presents too many options. Too many ways to go wrong.

porndrawing log - 05.03.09
It's no secret that I watch a lot of porn. Like, probably more than you do.
Today, to get a break from Necronomicook, I tried pausing a DVD at various spots and doing short tonal studies on the Cintiq. There's a bit of improv going on, but all these shots were observed from Volume 4 of the all-girl series "We Live Together." There's 7 of them to date. There's a pay site also. It's porn.
Since I wasn't restricted by stubby china marker on newsprint, I was able to get a little more specific than usual. I know. "Of all the subject matter", right? I figured if I'm going to be viewing, I might as well be learning. It's more than most guys manage, and I've got more than enough DVDs on hand.
Probably should have kept this to myself, since it's (a) kind of creepy and (b) implies I swipe my naughty stuff directly from videos, but I swear it's just for the purpose of study/practice!
